It's time to return to spawn beyond the Mianus fishway

Herring return to Mianus Fishway
Stamford Advocate

By Frank MacEachern

GREENWICH -- Michael Aurelia leans forward and scoops up a lone herring from the Mianus River fish ladder in Cos Cob.

"Caught one," he said happily after netting the 10-inch herring on his fourth attempt last Monday afternoon.

That herring was among the tens of thousands beginning the trip up the Mianus River to spawn in an annual rite of spring....

....A camera last was installed to monitor the fish swimming through the ladder. Savageau said, providing a more accurate count. She said it will determine, especially later in the season, whether the fish being counted are traveling upriver to spawn or are returning to the sea.

By the end of April, those images will be streamed online so that anyone can watch the herring wiggle their way through the counter....
