Wednesday Aug. 6, 2008 Neither candidate in Democrat 4th District primary meets standard

To the Editor:

On Tuesday voters in the Democratic primary will be asked to decide between Jim Himes and Lee Whitnum.

Whitnum's campaign is based on personal anger, blaming the H1B program for her inability to find employment. Harvard educated, Whitnum's intellect is largely absent throughout her campaign, one which is based on her own necessities. Her lack of intellectual thinking was recently displayed in a debate when she advocated the return of Taliban rule for Afghanistan.

However, to her credit, she challenged a corrupt electoral system that has allowed the two-party system to prevent nominees not endorsed from running, forcing the non-endorsee to petition their way onto the ballot. Voters, not partisans, are more qualified in selecting nominees.

In fact, it was voters who chose DeStefano as the Democratic candidate for governor, even though a party convention had chosen Malloy.

Whitnum complains that Himes is of a privileged background, yet Himes says otherwise. Himes wants us to know that he previously worked for an organization that promoted affordable housing. No mention of his Harvard or Oxford degrees, his time as vice president at Goldman Sachs, or the $1.5 million home he owns in Cos Cob. It's fair to say that Himes is indeed from a privileged background, whether he accepts it or not.

If elected, Himes would certainly be liberal, advocating positions that may not be beneficial to our district, such as middle class tax increases. If residents want a representative who will simply show up to vote as the party desires, then Himes would be that candidate.

Since neither Whitnum or Himes are qualified to represent our moderate district, I recommend that we relay our dissatisfaction by writing in "None of the Above" on the ballot. It is time that we the people, not the party, determine through an open primary system, who best represents our views. Neither candidate satisfies that hurdle.

08/02/08 Superman creation story is a lively read

With summer pop culture dominated by super-hero movies, Greenwich author Marc Tyler Nobleman has one of the most perfectly timed books of the year - "Boys of Steel: The Creators of Superman" .

Although the oversized volume is designed for young readers, the lively and deeply researched text and the beautiful illustrations by Ross McDonald should also attract older comic-book fans.

"Boys of Steel" traces the long and rocky journey taken by two Depression-era Cleveland "nerds" — Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster — to create a new super-hero for one of the toughest periods in American history.

The two young men loved Flash Gordon and Tarzan, but wanted to create a fresh American hero.

"A brave, tough man who fought for truth and justice an alien who came from far away and now lived on Earth. The real Earth, the Great Depression Earth," Nobleman writes.

The most clever element in the character — the idea that separated Superman from Flash and Tarzan — was the fact that he had to keep his powers secret from human peers.

Young Siegel and Shuster saw Superman's alter ego of newspaperman Clark Kent to be someone like themselves.

" He would be meek and mild, like Joe and I are, and wear glasses, like we do," Jerry Siegel thought.

"No one would guess that such a hero was also someone like them," Nobleman explains.

"Boys of Steel" is the culmination of four years of work by Nobleman, who wanted to honor the creators of the comic books he's loved all of his life.

"I made steps to do the book when Jerry [Siegel] was still alive but I was told 'Jerry doesn't want to be reached. Don't even try,' " Nobleman recalled in a recent phone interview from his home in the Cos Cob section of Greenwich....

Jul 24, 2008 Exclusive: Himes on Himes

These days, Fourth District Democratic Congressional candidate Jim Himes is striving to keep a high profile throughout Fairfield County. And as part of his efforts to introduce himself to voters, Himes is attending 17 town meetings in 17 days, a tour the campaign has dubbed the "Listening and Leading Tour."

"It's a great opportunity to get to meet the voters and exchange ideas on the issues," Himes said in a recent interview with the Minuteman Editorial Board. "We've gotten a warm reception and it's been very gratifying."Himes is opposing incumbent Congressman Christopher Shays, a Republican who has represented the Fourth District since 1987.

In the past two election cycles, Shays has fended off a pair of serious election challenges from former Westport First Selectwoman Diane Farrell.

Himes said the reason he is running is simple: he wants the nation to return to its core values."It might sound hokey, but I firmly believe in our constitutional principles," explained Himes. "The ideas of freedom, service and democracy that guided the hands of our Founding Fathers. The American dream has been eroded."

Himes explained the starting point for America's return to core values involves three main issues: education, universal health care and energy. In terms of universal health care, Himes was critical of Shays' co-sponsoring The American Health Care Benefits Program Act (AHBP) with Congressman Jim Langevin, a Rhode Island Democrat.

"Chris Shays has been a Johnny-come-lately on this issue," noted Himes. "Jim Langevin has tried to get this bill passed in the past, and Chris Shays is coming on board only when it has reached a crisis stage."

Himes, who was born in Lima, Peru, and also lived in Bogota, Colombia as a child before moving to New Jersey, noted another reason he was running for Congress is the excellent public education he received in the Garden State."That public education is why I was able to go to Harvard and then to Oxford," he said. "Look, why is it that 40 percent of students in Bridgeport that walk into high school as freshmen don't walk out as graduates?"

Himes, a resident of Cos Cob, worked for 12 years at Goldman Sachs after Harvard and Oxford, then left the financial firm to join Enterprise Community Partners, a non-profit organization charged with eradicating urban poverty. The candidate's financial background has proven to be a boost, as he is nearly even with Shays in fundraising. In figures released by the Federal Election Commission on July 16, Himes had raised $2.1 million as compared with Shays $2.3 million.

Another positive for Himes in the race with Shays is the widespread unpopularity of President George W. Bush. As the lone remaining Republican Congressman in New England, Shays will be vulnerable if anti-Bush sentiments and Barack Obama supporters drive up voter turnout. That could be especially harmful in Bridgeport, which is heavily Democratic, but has traditionally had low turnout.

The Democratic candidate argued that Shays has been lax on bringing significant funding back to the district, saying that freshman Connecticut Congressmen Chris Murphy and Joe Courtney have done a better job that Shays, now in his 21st year on Capitol Hill."I'll be a Congressman who can walk into (Speaker of the House) Nancy Pelosi's office on day one and say here's what we need for our district," said Himes.

Himes, who is a former Chairman of the Greenwich Democratic Town Committee, said he would not necessarily align himself lock, stock and barrel with the national Democratic Party on every issue.

"I'm particularly disappointed with how the Democrats handled FISA," said Himes. The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), born after the Watergate scandal, establishes how the government can secretly eavesdrop on Americans in their own country in intelligence investigations.

On July 10, President Bush signed the FISA Amendments Act of 2008 (FAA), aimed at updating the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA). The law meant to update FISA but many insist it gutted the original law by eviscerating the role of the judicial oversight in government surveillance.

The law also gave sweeping immunity to the telecommunications companies that aided the Bush administration's warrantless wiretapping program. The act would not have passed without Democratic support and Obama controversially endorsed its passage.

But before he gets to Congress and even before he gets a crack at Shays, Himes must first defeat Lee Whitnum of Greenwich, who has collected enough signatures to force a Democratic primary Aug. 12.

Himes said he is glad Whitnum qualified for the ballot."From a practical standpoint, it's great for me," Himes said. "This allows me to get my name out there and to get our operation ready to go.

"I'm not taking anything for granted, but I am looking forward to the primary."

Jun 25, 2008 Fox News Goes Tapeless

by Craig Johnston

Craig Johnston is a Seattle-based Internet and multimedia producer with an extensive background in broadcast.

NEW YORKAs Fox News Channel approached its 10th anniversary in 2005, the broadcast facility looked to replace its tape-based news story workflow. While the network could have chosen to go tapeless in a piecemeal manner as other networks had done, it decided to go tapeless end-to-end.

“We’re kind of aggressive here,” said Greg Ahlquist, senior director of Digital Media Production at Fox News Channel and Fox Business Network. With such a radical change from tape to tapeless, stretching from camera and feed acquisition to play-out and deep archive, the network sought help from Media Strategy Partners, a Cos Cob, Conn.-based company that began its life doing digital workflows for sports.

Paul Gudelis, co-founder of MSP, pointed out a number of similarities between news and sports broadcasting, such as their focus on real-time, fast turnaround, and the need for logging and metadata to retrieve material. “Where news is different is that it relies on a very deep archive for background material,” he said.

FOX BUSINESS GOES FIRST

MSP’s first job was to observe FNC’s video tape-based operation, to understand that workflow. “How do you determine that you have enough capacity to duplicate a lot of what you’re doing?” asked Ahlquist. “And how do you change your management enough within the organization so that they all know what they need to know in order to create an efficient workflow and not duplicate efforts?”...
